After some confusion lately, I figured it'd be good to write rules specific to TTA Mafia. ;)
If any terms don't make sense, check the next post for Mafia terminology. If you have any questions, post them here and I (or someone else) will answer them.

---
Mafia around here is played in one of two places - either on the forums or in chat. For the forums, check the specific sign-up topics and check the entry requirements there. For chat mafia, join #mafiairc to see if there are enough people around for a game.
---
In most games of Mafia, there are two teams: Town and Mafia/scum. The objective for both teams is to survive until the end of the game.
There may also be one or more extra teams, referred to as Independents, 3rd-Party or Indies.
---
For Town: Town players generally outnumber everyone else, but they do not know who the other Town players are. They are not allowed to communicate outside of the main game topic/channel.
For Mafia: Mafia players know who each other are and have BTSC.
---
Mafia games are split into two phases, Day and Night, which alternate throughout the game. It can start on either phase, but generally starts in the Day.
---
During the Day: Every player talks in the game topic/channel and tries to determine who is the most suspicious player. Each player has one vote, which they cast by typing ##Vote: Player. There are two ways for the day to end:
- 1. When over half the votes during a day are on one player, that player is lynched.
- 2. If nobody receives over half the votes before a set deadline, then a lynch is decided by other means. (This is generally up to the mod, so ask the specific mod if unsure.)
The objective for Town during the Day is to find and lynch the Mafia players. The objective for Mafia during the Day is to not be found by Town, and get other Town players lynched instead.
---
During the Night: In every Mafia game, the Mafia team will have some way of killing during the Night. This is sent, in private, to the moderator, who will show the death at the start of the next Day.
In most Mafia games, other players will also have roles, which allow them to do various things. A list of common roles can be found in the post below. These are carried out in the same way as the Mafia kill - by messaging the moderator in private to inform them of the target.
---
Ending the Game: The Days and Nights alternate until one of two things occurs:
- 1. If there are no Mafia players left alive, then Town win.
- 2. If Town cannot win, then the Mafia win. (This generally occurs by the Mafia outnumbering Town, thus preventing a lynch.)
---
Some extra rules that will always apply:
- Never quote the moderator from outside of the game topic. (This includes any chat conversations or PMs, including your role PM and night actions.) You may rephrase role/night action PMs to explain them, but cannot directly quote the moderator.
- Never edit your posts. Even if it's just a spelling mistake, editing your post is always against the rules.

Breaking any of the rules generally results in a modkill, sometimes preceded by a warning (depending on which rules have been broken).

Terminology:
3rd-Party - See: Independent.
Alignment - Which team you are part of. (Town/Mafia/Independent)
Bastard Mod (BM) - A completely unpredictable setup. Named for the lack of predictability and information provided by the moderator.
BTSC - Behind the Scenes Contact. The freedom to talk outside of the game topic/channel.
Day - The phase between Night phases. (Explained in the above post)
Independent - A non-Mafia/Town player or team. Usually win by having to survive, but sometimes have completely different win conditions.
LaL - Lynch a Lurker. The idea that, if in doubt, Town should lynch somebody who is not talking, since they are not contributing.
LYLO - Lynch-Or-Lose. A situation where lynching the wrong player leads to a Mafia win. (Potential LYLO means that lynching the wrong player might lead to a Mafia win, but lynching a Town player will not always be a loss.)
Lynch - The day kill, decided by votes.
Mafia - The standard 'enemy' team (explained in the above post). Generally shown through red text.
Meta - Arguments based not around evidence but around assumptions. The two main examples are player meta ("But that player always posts more if he's scum!") and role meta ("But it's rare to have both Cop and Doctor in a game!"). While both can be used as arguments, it is generally best not to form an argument around these, using them solely to support a case.
Night - The phase between the Day phases, during which the majority of roles are used, including the Mafia NK.
NK - Stands for Night-Kill. Any kill that occurs during a Night Phase.
OMGUS - Stands for "omg u suck!" A vote for someone who voted for you, for no reason other than them voting for you. Often used by new players or the Mafia as an excuse to not place a clearly-argued vote.
OPG/OPN - Stand for Once Per Game/One Per Night. Can be applied to a variety of roles.
Role - Your ability. Most are OPN, although some are innate abilities or work during the Day.
Role Madness (RM) - A game in which every player has a role of some sort.
Scum - See: Mafia.
Town - The standard 'good' team (explained in the above post). Generally shown through blue text.
WIFOM - Wine In Front Of Me. Refers to an endless chain of logic, usually regarding Mafia actions. (See end of post for name explanation.)

Common Roles:
-- These are colour-coded by their most common alignment. Blue is Town, red is Mafia, brown is 3rd-Party and standard font is not alignment-specific. Unless otherwise specified, all roles are OPN.
Bodyguard - Like the Doctor role, but they are killed in place of their target.
Bomb - Innate ability. If they are killed, the killer dies too. The rules regarding lynches of this role are determined by the specific moderator.
Bulletproof - Innate ability. Immune to NKs. (Can be OPN - kill goes through if they are targeted twice in the same night.)
Cop - Can discover someone's alignment. (Frequently OPG)
Doctor - Can prevent someone from being killed. (Frequently OPG or unable to self-target.)
Godfather - Bulletproof. Shows as Town to Cops.
Jack of All Trades - Gets multiple roles, usually with some limitation on use (e.g. all one-shot; cannot choose which role, etc)
Mason - Innate ability. Have BTSC with other Masons. May or may not be confirmed as Town to each other.
Roleblocker - Can prevent somebody else from using their role during that night.
Rolecop - Can discover someone else's role.
Serial Killer - See: Vigilante.
Tracker - Can discover who a player targeted.
Vanilla - A term used for someone without a role. (Flavourless = Vanilla. ;)) Often referred to as Citizen or Goon.
Vigilante - Can kill someone during the Night.
Watcher - Can discover who targeted a player.

WIFOM:
You are challenged to a contest. There are two cups of wine, one in front of you and one in front of the challenger. One of these cups is poisoned. You must drink from one cup, but you can choose which. The person who survives wins.
So, the obvious logic is that the poisoned cup will be your one. But then, will the challenger assume you'll think like that and give himself the poisoned cup? But then, he could predict that and so swap them back... And so on, hence the endless chain of logic.
(The actual reference comes from... the Princess Bride, I think, and, in the actual scenario, both cups are poisoned, so it's not even a true WIFOM situation. Oh well~)
